As a critical indicator for economic governance, accurate measurement of GDP is essential for well-informed policymaking. Moreover, most macroeconomic indicators such as current account position, fiscal position, debt ratios, tax ratios, investment and saving ratios that are frequently used to assess the health of an economy and in economic policymaking are often expressed as a ratio of the gross domestic product (GDP). Expressing such indicators in terms of GDP not only puts them into context but also helps to compare them fairly across countries and regions and thereby providing targets and basis for policies aimed at strengthening the indicators. This makes GDP arguably the single most important indicator in macroeconomics.
It is, therefore, very important for countries to have the most accurate estimates of their GDP. The accuracy of the value of GDP on the other hand is largely influenced by the extent to which it reflects the changes in the economy over time and emergence of new products and activities. For these reasons, it is important for countries to regularly rebase their GDP. The United Nations Statistical Commission (UNSC), the agency responsible for developing the global framework for the computation of System of National Accounts (SNA), recommends countries to change GDP base year every five (5) years.
To that effect, ECMR.1 of ECMR is seeking to recruit one individual Consultant with solid background in empirical economic analysis to support Research Economists to conduct a technically strong analysis on the implications of GDP rebasing on African countries.
